What is a Black Hole and What Does it do?

A Black Hole is a region of spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothing can escape from it, not even particles or electromagnetic radiation such as light. The boundary of escape is called the event horizon. In many ways, a black hole acts like an ideal black body, as it reflects no light. A black body is an idealized physical body that absorbs all incident electromagnetic radiation, regardless of frequency or angle of incidence. Objects whose gravitational fields are too strong for light to escape were first considered in the 18th century and, until 1960s, black holes were considered a mathematical curiosity. Also, black holes of stellar mass form when massive stars collapse at the end of their life cycle. One formed, it can continue to grow by absorbing mass from other stars and merging with other black holes around.

The Nearest Black Hole to Our Solar System

According to the online article "Closest Black Hole to Earth, 'The Unicorn,' lies 1500 Light-Years Away," written by Aristos Georgiou, the closes black hole to Earth found is around 1500 light-years away. The black is about three times the mass of our sun which it is also considered one of the smallest black holes on record. The researchers decided to name this black hole "Unicorn" because of its unique characteristics, as well as the fact that it is located in the constellation Monoceros, which in Greek it stands for "unicorn."
